KID HORSES FOR SALE - RETIREMENT HORSES

ANNUAL KID HORSE SALE -Saturday, OCTOBER 1, 2011

11 am preview, 1 pm drawing. Each horse is $500. All sales are final.

At Montana Horses, we lease the very best recreational horses to top notch establishments throughout the Northwest and seasonal homeowners in Montana.  These horses are charged with taking care of inexperienced horse-people through summers and hunting seasons.  In the winter, our horses are brought home and turned out to vacation on winter range, where they get to act like wild horses for half the year.  Each year, we retire a portion of our good herd of lease horses due to their age and their subsequent inability to winter out on pasture or stand up under the rigors of the lease seasons.  These horses have spent many years taking care of inexperienced riders.  They have become part of our family and we have grown to love them just as if they were.  As they retire, we hope to place them with children who are working into their first horse, where they can build the confidence they need from these older horses to eventually move onto younger, faster horses.

All of our retirement horses are at least 20 years old and are being retired because of their age and inability to winter on range or handle strenuous work.  These horses are intended for beginning riders, light use, and need to be cared for with supplemental feed in the winter. No guarantees. All sales are final. Bring your horse trailer and make plans to haul your new horse home on sale day. A brand inspector will be on hand to complete the transfers - lifetime brand inspections are $25. Out-of-state buyers should be aware that additional health papers will be required to transport your horses across state lines. We'll help with details. Call for more information - 406 285-3541. Price is $500 each.

2011 Sale List.

All horses listed are ours, carry our brands, and have worked on our ranch for many years. Ages are all in the early 20's. Height is approximate.

Due to the recent announcement of our Ranch Land for Sale and imminent retirement, many of our summer lessees have opted to purchase their horses this fall. Here is our sale lineup, perfect kid horses for sale.

1. "Bobcat" - The end of an era! We have had Bobcat since the inception of our business. He moved to Montana with us! He's 22 years old this year and it is time he retired. (Same with us. We often said, "When Bobcat is done working, so are we.") He made this outfit and deserves a very special home, with a little kid to usher into the world of horses. He is gentle for even the very smallest, will pack and ride, and is by far one of the best horses to grace this place. He is slow, steady, and reliable for even little, little kids. Bay gelding, approx. 16hh.

2. "Glenda" We call her Peppermint Patty because she loves peppermint candies. This mare is quite a horse, perfect for a kid who wants to go out and keep up with the big horses, maybe work cattle with the folks, do some gaming, 4-H, or trail rides. She has been working in a dude string in Montana for over a decade and in her younger years, not so long ago, she even worked the Horse Drive and foxhunt. Super sweet, gentle for all but the very smallest riders, Glenda has lots of years left to take someone onto being competitive or graduate to a younger horse. Appy grey mare, approx 15.1hh.

3. 'Gordon" Gordon is the perfect addition to any family's string, he'll follow and pack even your smallest up the mountain and down again. He's a great horse for those who want to use a gentle babysitter to go along, or even for dad to use as a pack horse once a year for hunting. He is not a born leader, he'll be waiting for you at the gate and you can trust him to watch the kids until you get back without getting into trouble. Very quiet, gentle, and a nice big grey gelding, approx. 15.2hh

4. "Greek " Greek and Gordon are very similar, having been in the same dude string together for years. They both pack and ride and will take your little ones along, following until the end of the earth. Neither are very interested in leaving the pack, so they'll be best fitting into a group of other riders. Sorrel gelding, approx 15.1hh

5. "Howdy" Another favorite that made this place! We trust Howdy with everyone, and he'll pack novices and even little, little kids. He's seen more country than we have, packs, rides, and is super gentle and very friendly. He's got a little draft somewhere in there, so he's a big boy. Bay gelding, approx. 15.3hh

6. "Judd" This big pretty papered AQHA gelding is very gentle and only 15 years old. He's not wintering well with us, so it is best to get him into a different environment, where he can get the supplemental feed he needs. He's very well broke, and has been taking novices into the mountains for a few years with us, but he's just never taken to the ranch life. He'd prefer to be a backyard horse, and maybe with a teeth float and some extra cookies, he'll take you for another decade of mountain riding. He's been used in dude strings, hunting camp, and trail rides. Sorrel geldng, approx. 16hh.

7. "Mick" Gentle pretty grey gelding, who is perfect for most levels of novices and perfect for kids in a trail ride or pack string. He's a big, stretchy horse who can plat run and turn if asked, so might make a good starter 4-H or gaming horse for someone who wants to be competitive. He's been packing novices on guest ranches and trail rides, and at kid's camps, for years. apprx. 15.3hh

8. "Primo" Another end of an era! Primo spent over a decade packing kids in the Big Sky Canyon and taking hunters in to the mountains each fall. The last couple years, she's had easier duty, working at summer homes and teaching kids how to take care of horses and to ride. This year, we even used her on our own Bob Marshall pack trip. I trust this horse with even the smallest and most novice. She's gentle, and very quiet, and she'll work alone or in a string, keeping up or just standing quiet when asked. Primo is a perfect first horse. Grey mare, approx 14.2hh.
